Meet Megan

BLOOM Maternal Therapy was founded by Megan Richert, LCSW, a Central Coast mom, therapist, and passionate advocate for women and families. A Cal Poly graduate and longtime San Luis Obispo local, Megan has called the Central Coast home for more than 20 years. She has always been deeply curious about people, their stories, and what makes them who they are -and has often joked that she’s been known to “stare at people a little too long.” From an early age, she knew she wanted to be in a helping profession, supporting people through the moments in life when they need it most.

Megan earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Psychology from Cal Poly before earning her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Denver. After two winters in Denver, she was more than ready to come home to San Luis Obispo in 2010, where she married the love of her life and began building her career and family on the Central Coast.

For nearly a decade, Megan worked as a Medical Social Worker for local Home Health and Hospice agencies. This experience shaped the way she understands care today: physical health and mental health are deeply connected, and people deserve to be cared for as a whole. She loved working alongside physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals and saw firsthand how meaningful support can be during life’s most vulnerable seasons.

Then, in 2015, Megan became a mom herself.

After the birth of her first son, she experienced postpartum depression. Like so many new mothers, she found herself navigating an enormous life transition while realizing just how little support was available specifically for the mother.

She remembers thinking,

“Where is the support for the mom?”

That question stayed with her.

It opened her eyes to a gap in care on the Central Coast – and eventually became the beginning of something much bigger. Megan knew women and families deserved therapists who understood the unique emotional experience of pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood, and who could offer specialized support during these transformative years.

In February 2020, Megan opened her own private practice, just six weeks before the world changed. She began specializing in perinatal mental health, combining her professional experience with the personal understanding that comes from being a mom herself.

And in April 2023, BLOOM Maternal Therapy was born.

What began with a simple belief, that moms deserved better care, has grown into a thriving group practice with deep roots in the Central Coast community. Today, BLOOM is supported by a growing network of local OB-GYNs, hospitals, psychiatrists, doulas, lactation consultants, and other providers who share the belief that perinatal mental health deserves specialized attention and care.

Bloom 366

Megan’s vision for BLOOM is to raise the standard of perinatal mental health care on the Central Coast and throughout California.

She has intentionally built a female-owned practice made up of women who are deeply passionate about this work, bringing specialized training, clinical experience, and genuine compassion to the families they serve.

Beyond the therapy room, Megan is passionate about education and connection. She regularly speaks with local parent groups and hospital support groups to bring greater awareness to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and help women know where to turn when they need support. She is also part of a local Perinatal Mental Health Coalition working to connect providers, close gaps in care, and strengthen support for women and families throughout the community.

In 2026, BLOOM was honored with a Best of the Central Coast Bronze award for Best Women’s Clinic – a meaningful reflection of the community Megan has worked so intentionally to build.

As a hands-on founder and visionary, Megan remains deeply involved in BLOOM’s growth, its team, and the community it serves. Her hope is simple: that no woman going through the perinatal phase of life has to wonder, “Where is the support for the mom?” again.

Because moms deserve support, too. And sometimes, finding the right person to walk beside you can make all the difference.
