I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore: Understanding Perimenopause

There’s a moment many women quietly experience, often without warning, when something starts to feel… different. Maybe it’s subtle at first – changes in mood, sleep, energy, or focus. Maybe it’s more noticeable, like increased anxiety, irritability, or a sense of emotional overwhelm that doesn’t quite make sense.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, a thought begins to surface: I don’t feel like myself anymore.

Perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, can hold just as much complexity as it does change. While it’s a completely natural part of life, it’s often misunderstood, under-discussed, and oftentimes minimized. This season can bring physical shifts, yes – but also emotional and psychological changes that can feel confusing, frustrating, and even isolating.

With hormonal fluctuations, changes in identity, evolving relationships, sleep disruption, and shifting roles all happening at once, it’s no wonder this stage can feel disorienting. You may find yourself asking: Why do I feel so off? Why is everything suddenly harder? Is this just stress… or something more?

These questions don’t mean something is wrong with you. They mean your body and mind are moving through a significant transition, one that deserves understanding, support, and care.

This is where learning about perimenopause, and receiving the right kind of support, can make a meaningful difference.

Perimenopause is the period of time leading up to menopause, often beginning in a woman’s 30s or 40s, when hormone levels (particularly estrogen and progesterone) begin to fluctuate. This phase can last several years and affects each person differently. For some, symptoms are mild and manageable. For others, they can feel intense, unpredictable, and deeply disruptive to daily life.

Beyond physical symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, or sleep disturbances, perimenopause can also impact mental health in very real ways. Mood swings, increased anxiety, low mood, brain fog, irritability, and a sense of losing yourself are all common – yet often not talked about enough.

Here are a few important things to understand about this season:

1. What You’re Feeling Is Real – and It’s Not “Just in Your Head”

Hormonal changes during perimenopause directly affect brain chemistry, which can influence mood, emotional regulation, and stress response. If you’ve noticed yourself feeling more anxious, more reactive, more tearful, or less like yourself, there is a physiological reason for that.

This doesn’t make your experience any less valid, it makes it more understandable. You’re not overreacting. You’re responding to real changes happening in your body.

2. Perimenopause Can Affect More Than Just Your Body

YThis season often overlaps with other life transitions – career shifts, parenting changes, relationship evolution, or caring for aging parents. At the same time, many women begin reflecting more deeply on identity, purpose, and what comes next.

That combination can feel like a lot to hold. It’s not just about hormones, it’s about navigating change on multiple levels, all at once.

Perimenopause can be a time of:

  • Reevaluating your sense of self
  • Noticing shifts in relationships or priorities
  • Feeling stretched between responsibilities
  • Questioning what you need (and what you no longer do)

These experiences are valid, even when they feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

3. You Don’t Have to Wait Until It Feels Unmanageable to Seek Support

Many women dismiss what they’re feeling during perimenopause or assume they just need to “push through.” But support doesn’t have to be reserved for moments of crisis.

Whether you’re feeling slightly off or significantly overwhelmed, having a space to process what’s changing can be incredibly helpful.

Support during perimenopause can look like:

  • Understanding how hormonal changes affect mental health
  • Learning tools to manage anxiety, mood shifts, and stress
  • Processing identity changes and life transitions
  • Improving sleep, boundaries, and self-care rhythms
  • Feeling seen and validated in what you’re experiencing

This kind of support is proactive. It helps you stay connected to yourself during a season that can otherwise feel disconnecting.

4. Your Experience Deserves to Be Met with Compassion, Not Dismissal

One of the hardest parts of perimenopause is how often it’s minimized – by others, and sometimes even by yourself. You might feel pressure to “handle it,” to not make it a big deal, or to keep showing up the way you always have.

But this is a season where your needs may be shifting. Your capacity may look different. And that’s not a failure – it’s information.

You deserve space to talk about what’s changing without being brushed off or told it’s “just part of getting older.” Your experience matters, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

5. You Deserve Specialized, High-Level Care

That feeling of not recognizing yourself can be unsettling. But perimenopause isn’t about losing who you are – it’s about your body and mind recalibrating in a new phase of life.

This can be an opportunity, even if it doesn’t feel like it yet, to reconnect with yourself in a different way. To listen more closely. To adjust expectations. To care for yourself with more intention.

You are still you – even if things feel unfamiliar right now.
